E-commerce. The horse has bolted.

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

A couple of months back we wrote on our blog with our predictions of what will happen to the Internet during the credit crunch and recession. Our belief was that the Internet is one of few industries that will benefit in the recession, namely because going online is cheap, it is entertaining and when you have less to spend on essentials (as well as a smaller disposable income), you’re going to shop around for the best deal. And we all know that comparing prices online takes minutes, instead of walking back and forth from shop to shop.

And it seems our predictions were correct. The BBC reports that e-tailers saw a 37% increase in visitors to their websites in the run  up to Christmas. 37% represents a huge amount! Considering that retail visits and sales were down just a couple of percent, it seems that people really have taken to buying more and more products online.

For those with good, established websites that have full e-commerce (accepting credit card payment, processing the order and despatching the order via courier), it’s like the dot.com bubble all over again. However, those without e-commerce websites risk being left far behind. And with the digital divide growing and more people relying on the Internet, you really cannot afford to wait any longer.

Spiral Media can produce full e-commerce websites from £1000 upwards. We have years of expertise with working with shopping carts, credit card merchants and introducing delivery regimes. If you’re interested in what we can offer, just drop us an email or give us a call. We’d love to hear from you.
