How To Add Products In Magento

The best place to start with adding products in Magento is the same as most places – at the beginning.

Adding products into Magento is one of the first steps on your way to creating a successful eCommerce website.

Let’s start by logging in to your Magento website:

Once you are in the Magento Admin area, head along the following path:

– Catalog

— Manage Products

— Add Product

Product Types

Product Type determines how your product will be listed on the front end.

Simple Product

This creates a product with its own product page.

Grouped Product

Very similar to a simple product on the back end, as it has its own SKU, but it is grouped with similar products on a single product page when it appears on the front end.

Example: red shoes in the same style, but with different sizes to choose from

Configurable Product

Just like a Grouped product in that it shares a product page with other variants, though it may also have more than one variable to choose from.

Example: a particular style of shoes with a combination of different colours and sizes to choose from

Product Options

You have a selection of product options that you should complete before you can save. These are:

Name (Required)

The category name appears in the navigation, and also in the URL key of the category page and associated product pages.

Is Active (Required)

To make this category visible on your website, select Yes.

Include in Navigation Menu (Required)

Determines if the category is included in the main menu. If you choose No, this hides the category, although it is active. Hidden categories do not appear in the top navigation, but are included in layered navigation.

URL Key (Required)

The URL Key is the path that leads through from the category, and is automatically generated when you select which category the product is saved to.

Note: if you edit the default URL key, a custom redirect is created automatically.

Description (Required)

This is where you can describe your product to customers. For SEO purposes, it is better to write your own description, rather than copy and pasting the manufacturer’s description.

Using product images gives your customers a better idea of what they are buying and the more images you can include, the better.

Page Title

The product page title appears in the browser tab and title bar. Best practice for Google SERPs is that your title shouldn’t be more than 60 characters in length and should always include the product name.

Meta Description

Here you can enter a description of the product for Google SERPs. It should be no more than 155 characters and should include the product name.

Adding Images

When you want to add images to your product, head to the Images tab on the right hand side navigation.

Here you will see a Browse Images button. Click it and you will be taken to your desktop files to choose the images you want.

Once selected, you’ll need to upload them by clicking Upload Images.

Note: If you navigate away from the page before uploading your images, they will not save

When your images have uploaded, you can then add some alt text to each one in the Label section. It is best to use the product name and then some variation to the end to make each one different.

For example:

  • Giant Cat Plushie Front
  • Giant Cat Plushie Back
  • Giant Cat Plushie Close Up

and so on…

Adding Product Attributes

This is where you can add attributes to each of your products which will help define them to your customers.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • colour
  • weight
  • size
  • who the product is for
  • materials
  • etc…

You can create your attribute parameters in the Catalog > Attributes section:
