How To Install A Magento Theme

23/11/2016

Fancy a change? Installing a new Theme on your eCommerce website could be just what you need.

Magento Themes are an easy way to change the look of your Magento website, even if you only have the basic skills.

Not only do they change the look of your website, but they can also add different features and functions as well.

There are two ways you can install a new Theme on your Magento website.

1. Using Magento Connect

When you use Magento Connect, you will receive an Extension Key.

Once you have this key, head over to your Magento Admin Area and follow the following path:

System > Magento Connect > Magento Connect Manager

You’ll need to re-enter your admin login details, then paste the extension key and then click Install.

2. Installing a Theme Manually

Find Your Theme

When you download a new theme, it will typically come as a .zip file and will be downloaded to your computer.

Once you have downloaded it to your computer, you’ll need to unzip it.

There will be a selection of files based on what Theme you have chosen but most of them will include these two files in particular:

/app
/skin

You’ll need to connect to your web host via FTP, and then upload all of the files to the root of your website.

Setting Up Your Theme

Next, you need to head to your Magento back end.

Once you’ve logged in, head along the following path:

System > Configuration > General > Design

You should see a Themes tab you can click on which will then expand.

Fill in the sections in relation to your eCommerce website (although you should only need to fill in Translations if you are using a different language on your site)

And Finally

Once you have completed all of the steps above, remember to clear your Magento cache to check that the changes have been applied.
