LinkedIn vs. Facebook: Which is Better for Your Business?


LinkedIn and Facebook are social networking sites that are very much well-known and widely used in this modern age by almost everyone around the globe. However, these two social networking sites focus on specific markets and are very much efficient and effective in doing so.

Facebook aims to connect friends, business associates, and family. They can send each other messages, chat, poke, add old and new friends and more. There are many different applications you can find from within this site. However it is primarily a B2C environment, where most users are in the ages of 18 to 34 years old. Though there are, of course, executives who are members of Facebook, the focus is not entirely for business rather for basic social networking activities. Facebook has evolved to incorporating a business page as one of their features to advertise your company but the audience is more consumer-based.

LinkedIn, on the other hand, is also a social networking site where the setting is more diverted and intended for professionals. The setting is corporate. LinkedIn is basically a business-related social networking site, and is more of a B2B approach. This is where an individual gets to network with colleagues or with other friends and establish professional communication. LinkedIn is being able to connect with trusted contacts, and allows you to exchange knowledge, ideas, and opportunities with a broader network of professionals.

Now the question: which is better for your business?

Facebook has a much bigger and wider range of services as compared to LinkedIn. This is mainly because of the third-party applications that people can install and then use. Therefore it is a more flexible medium of communication.

Business network visibility

Facebook as a medium for business networking has generated somewhat of a controversy. Companies that may want to use Facebook are skeptical because it may actually keep their employees so distracted from becoming efficient with their job and not actually performing what is expected of them. LinkedIn is made particularly for business networking in mind. You give or receive recommendations, grant introductions and simply interact with your business contacts. These allow for a better business environment.


Both social networking sites also have very strict privacy policies; however it is LinkedIn who truly excels when it comes to privacy settings. While Facebook is able to give their users with more control over privacy settings, LinkedIn allows you to see who has viewed your profile and gives you the ability to block people from peeking at your connections.


Facebook ads are very attractive. LinkedIn ads, on the other hand, are more focused and intentionally targeted to business professionals who are willing to spend money without being directed by tons of misleading ads. You may even simplify your target market by sorting them out based on their job functions, geographical demographics and other keywords.


There is no certain title-holder between Facebook and LinkedIn. They both do extremely well in different areas and situations. As a business owner, it is entirely up to you to determine your specific needs, your target market in order to establish which of the two social networking sites is better able to meet your goals.
